Dateline August 2000

August 24th

Despite gloomy mutterings about the weather, a fine and pleasant day for the Oban Highland Games. Some the bracken on the hillsides is already a golden brown, but most of it remains green.

August 14th

A nice little cruise ship swings at anchor in the Bay. One of the smallest ever to visit Oban, yet it still dwarfs the 'Isle of Mull' which creeps past as though no to disturb the tranquility of the holiday makers aboard.

August 14th

Some showers around and a few brief wet spells have been experienced, but this has had little effect on reservoir levels, which continue to fall. Sending water tankers to Tiree is something which nobody in oban can recall happening before.

August 1st

The dry spell continues almost unbroken. Some overnight rain, but not enough to help. Tiree is running out of water, and tankers are despatched. On the hills there are brown splodges visible where shallower soils have dried out and the grass is dying. Some trees ahve begun to shut down, and a few autumnal looking leaves are to be seen. Clear dry weather for the sailors of Tennents West Highland Yachting Week, but not much wind.
